Implementation of Maritime Spatial Planning in Latvia

Jūrmala, Latvia, 1st February 2010 

Baltic Environmental Forum in cooperation with Ministry of Regional Development and Local Government of the Republic of Latvia organised the meeting “Implementation of Maritime Spatial Planning in Latvia”, which was part of the stakeholder information activities of the BaltSeaPlan project. The meeting was held in Jūrmala, Latvia, on February 1, 2010.

The aim of the meeting was to give an overview of the current status of the development with regard to maritime spatial planning (MSP) in EU and Baltic Sea Region; to inform about activities of the BaltSeaPlan project and to discuss practical implementation of MSP in Latvia.

The main discussion topics were:
  • The current status concerning MSP in EU: political goals and practical experience. Dr. Nico Nolte, Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency.
  • Implementation of integrated maritime policy in Latvia. Ms. Brigita Buse, Ministry of the Transport.
  • Implementation of marine environmental policy in Latvia. Ms. Baiba Zasa, Ministry of the Environment.
  • Current situation regarding implementation of MSP in Latvia. Ms. Ingūna Urtāne, Ministry of Regional Development and Local Government.
  • Establishment of informative system on maritime uses. Mr. Jānis Krastiņš, Hydrography Serviss of Latvian Maritime administration.
  • Discussions within working groups on possibilities and conditions for MSP in Latvia as well as on current use of marine space and future interests, strategic priorities and potential conflicts

Participants of the meeting: representatives from ministries (Ministry of the Transport; Ministry of the Environment; Ministry of Regional Development and Local Government) and other competent authorities, local municipalities, public organisations and different stakeholder groups.
